Everyone Are Invited to Join as the Fourth Haim Bandmate.
"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."
However, there remains a key snag: I also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several famous supporters have publicly coveted the position.
One thing is obvious something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy hopefuls.
Similar to the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos frequently feature them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."
"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage people to start a band."
"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."
Historic Nod
The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.
They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.
"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"
The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.
"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."
Heartbreak and Candor
The record was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.
The words detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.
"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."
Development of Music
That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.
For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.
"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."
Experiences and Collective Camaraderie
The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.
One man left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.
"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."
An Assured Legacy
It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.
They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.
Yet the band will forever be their number one commitment.
"We have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
